Why it is called a townhouse
Historically, a townhouse, or house in town originates from England and Ireland, but mainly in the upper class parts of London, where the aristocracy used the dwellings as somewhere to stay when in the city. In England, they where mainly terraced houses. Most of the property owners had a residence in the country. Only a very small percentage, specifically the larger ones were detached or semi detached. There was little difference between the townhouses owned by the very wealthy aristocrats and the not so affluent. The main difference was the size. In these modern times, you do not need to be a Lord or a Duke to own a townhouse. If you move out of London, towards the North of England, the word townhouse is less used. People tend to refer to these homes as terraced. |
